Math 1.1 Number Patterns

Math 1.1 Number Patterns

Essential Question: How can you use properties to explain patterns?

Identity Property of Addition: the sum of any number and zero is that number.

7 + 0 = 7
210 + 0 = 210

Commutative Property of Addition: you can add two or more numbers in any order and get the same number.
(in addition you can switch the addends in any order to get the same answer)

3 + 4 = 7
4 + 3 = 7

So....,
3 + 4 = 4 + 3

Even or Odd?

even + even = even
odd + odd = even
odd + even = odd

IPads in the Classroom

We officially have 5 IPads for use in the classroom.  I am very excited to implement the use of this new technology.  I have already reviewed several apps for use like KidBlog, Class Dojo, and Vocabulary Spelling City, and many more.  I am hoping to use them for collaborative projects, research, review, and games - there are so many different uses and apps out there it's nearly impossible to choose only a few.  I will keep everyone posted on any apps used in the classroom, especially if they can be valuable resources used at home.

Now ...this new technology is a privilege we have in the classroom.  There are rules that must be followed in order to maintain and benefit from our IPads.

1. Always use two hands when carrying the IPad to and from your seat.
2. Stay seated when using the IPad.
3. Tap the screen gently! There will be no slamming, throwing, hitting, etc.
4. Stay on the app or website you're supposed to be on.

These are our classroom rules regarding IPads.  If a student fails to follow these rules, their IPad privileges will be revoked.

Homework Policy

Students will be given homework every night to reinforce skills learned in the classroom.  Homework will be graded every day.  It is the students' responsibility to make sure their assignments are completed and turned in on time.

If a student does not complete an assignment they will be required to finish any work during recess.  After every 5th missing assignment a note will be sent home and the student will have a recess detention.

Classroom Rules

1. Be Safe
School should be a safe place for everyone.  I stress the importance of practicing safe behavior, not only in my classroom but throughout the school.

2. Be Respectful
Students are expected to be respectful regarding all aspects of the school.  They are are expected to show respect towards themselves, their peers, school staff, and school property.

3. Follow Directions
There is an immense amount of things to do throughout every school day, following directions facilitates every aspect and keeps us not only focused but safe.

4. Try Your Best!
I expect my students to try their very hardest.  It's okay if you need help, but it is NOT acceptable to give up.  Try your hardest and I'll be there to help you succeed.

Welcome Back!!!

Welcome back to a new school year! My name is Ms. Quintero, but the students all call me Ms. Q. As of now I will be in charge of Mrs. Darstek's classroom for the next several weeks. It is possible that Mrs. Darstek may request an extension and if so I will keep you updated with any new information.

I am extremely excited to begin this new year. As you know we have received many new supplies for the students, which they will receive on the first day of school: pens, pencils, notebooks, highlighters, folders, etc. Along with new school supplies, Memorial School updated their Science, Social Studies, and Health textbooks. I have been busy perusing and organizing all the new material -- it all looks wonderful! These new textbooks, along with our recently added GoMath! give us great tools to use in the classroom.

Along with these new textbooks we are also implementing the use of Ipads in the classroom. After recent training I realized the many ways to use this technology to facilitate and enrich students' learning in the classroom. Those are only a few changes this upcoming year and I can't wait to work with all of you and the students.

See you soon,
Ms. Quintero
